How can a developer who has never had anything to do with the utilities industry be productive in their very first project? That was probably the most intriguing question I asked myself before starting my first utilities project. In retrospect, it was a fairly simple project in the area of \u200b\u200bmarketing communications. The only tasks involved were fixing bugs and implementing improvements in the ticketing system and supporting the upcoming format change in that context. However, it took quite a bit of work before it became a “simple” project. <\/p>\n\n

How did my entry into the field go? <\/h2>\n\n

Before delving into technical topics, I completed the orange class,<\/a> where I was able to primarily develop my technical skills. My main focus was on completing the trainee program<\/a> as a developer in all areas of SAP. <\/p>\n\n

My first contact with the utilities industry was during an on-site training course on energy economics. Over two days, the course provided participants with an interactive introduction to the fundamentals of energy supply. The training offered an overview of energy production, from production to the end device, such as the wall socket. Despite the limited time, I was able to develop a very good basic understanding of energy economics within those two days. Furthermore, some of the other participants were already more familiar with the subject matter, which allowed for further discussions during our shared dinners. <\/p>\n\n

Before the project officially began some time later, I was introduced to my mentor and project partner. Besides receiving introductory documents, I could rely on their constant availability and assistance with any questions. The numerous theoretical concepts I had learned during the energy industry training were demonstrated to me directly in SAP. <\/p>\n\n

How did the project go?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n

The first thing that happened in the project was an introduction to the client system by my mentor. He explained the processes and the general workflow. Of course, that’s easier said than done, and I had to admit to myself that it’s a long road until I understand all the connections. However, this was precisely what the project planning took into account, and that’s also why my mentor was assigned to me as a supporting subject matter expert. <\/p>\n\n

The approach involved having my mentor explain the requirements of each ticket, and then working together to troubleshoot the issue. It was also crucial that we jointly examined the code to determine which fields were correctly or incorrectly filled and which functions should be called. Even without being able to write code myself, my mentor often pointed me to the relevant or incorrect sections. This allowed us to resolve several tickets quite quickly. The better we, as a team, familiarized ourselves with the open issues, the faster and more effectively we could address the corresponding tickets and reduce the overall backlog. <\/p>\n\n

What obstacles have arisen?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n

The biggest hurdle of all is the complexity of the energy sector. Even after some time, I’m still learning something new every day in the vast and complex world of utilities. I also quickly realized that I don’t need to be an expert in everything. This was confirmed when I was told that it’s more advisable to have a perfect grasp of one area, even if it means being weaker in others. If you have a question that exceeds your mentor’s knowledge, you sometimes have to do a bit of digging. The problem here is that colleagues who might be knowledgeable about the topic are often not involved in the same project and are therefore harder to reach. <\/p>\n\n

Another point that underscores this complexity is the effect of small changes within the system. In development outside of SAP and utilities, I could make a change and test it immediately without having to worry too much about the consequences, since comprehensive testing is much simpler. However, in the SAP context, a small change can render one of the many possible constructs unusable. Given the sheer number of test scenarios, it’s not efficient to test every single one, not to mention that building all these constructs isn’t easy (for me, anyway). The adjustments I make must therefore be much more precise and aligned with sound business principles. <\/p>\n\n

What did I learn?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n

My primary focus was learning about the structures and many facets of the energy industry. There would be no development without specific professional requirements. In particular, I was able to expand my knowledge in the area of \u200b\u200bmetering processes. With this knowledge, I then explored further topics. <\/p>\n\n

In addition to the technical aspects, I also learned a great deal about SAP I-SU in the technical environment. Its complex structure is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with it, you can understand simpler constructs much more quickly. However, to get my bearings, I first had to invest a significant amount of time in learning and testing these structures. Fortunately, the customer’s system wasn’t overly complex and also provided me with a very good overview of a “typical” system. <\/p>\n\n

Since clients have their own development guidelines, I had to consider a different perspective, one that differed from my own programming style. However, clients were always able to explain these guidelines when asked. <\/p>\n\n

I’ve recently learned how incredibly important communication is between everyone involved, whether it’s with my mentor, other colleagues, or clients. Even speaking my thoughts aloud, even if they were occasionally wrong, has helped me understand the topic better. <\/p>\n\n

What would I recommend to beginners and mentors? <\/h2>\n\n

Not only is the utilities industry complex, but SAP is an equally complex program. Without proper training, even the best expertise is useless. Initially, it might be enough to write down transactions or take a few screenshots. A good alternative is to record videos. This will provide a quick solution for recurring problems in the future. <\/p>\n\n

Practical examples can often be tested and observed in a test system. To conduct analyses or even to understand what is happening in the first place, you can create plenty of examples yourself. <\/p>\n\n

Besides the technical aspects, it’s also helpful to familiarize yourself with the many terms used in the utilities industry, ideally to understand the relationships between market participants. The EDI@Energy documents provide a good foundation, but are difficult to understand without assistance. An explanation of the documents’ general content was helpful in this regard. <\/p>\n\n

The most important point of all: Nobody can know everything from the start. Both the beginner and the mentor should adopt this mindset. Even though I sometimes had trouble understanding things, I never felt pressured. It’s important that both sides take their time. In my early days, I never felt like I was facing a problem alone. At the same time, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask the right questions. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
