From the Ideal of Efficiency to the Imperative of Resilience<\/h2>\n\n

For decades, supply chain strategy in the specialty chemicals sector was shaped by a clear ideal of efficiency: lean inventories, precise planning, and \u201cJust-in-Time\u201d as the guiding principle. This paradigm was based on comparatively stable conditions \u2013 predictable trade rules, moderate freight costs, and reliable supplier structures. <\/p>\n\n

That world has changed fundamentally.<\/p>\n\n

As Dr. Marko Lange, Global Head of Chemicals at SAP<\/a>, explains, the decades of relative predictability have given way to persistent geopolitical tensions, raw material price volatility, and new trade barriers. The result: supply chains are coming under pressure much more frequently and intensely than traditional efficiency models can account for. Today, resilience must take equal precedence alongside purely cost-driven efficiency.<\/p>\n\n

Industry studies highlight the scale of the challenge. In the white paper \u201cChemical Sector Growth, AI Adoption, and Regulatory Challenges Foreseen\u201d <\/a>by SAP and the American Chemistry Council, 43% of surveyed chemical industry decision-makers cite logistics and supply chain disruptions as their biggest operational hurdle. At the same time, average transit times for chemical shipments are 25\u201335% above pre-pandemic levels. Shipments that used to take three weeks are now often in transit for five to six weeks.<\/p>\n\n

If companies respond to this by simply increasing safety stock across the board, they will exacerbate another problem: tied-up capital. Analyses by McKinsey<\/a> show that structural market changes, global overcapacity, and fluctuating energy costs are already putting pressure on margins. A static buffer may provide short-term reassurance, but it solves neither the volatility of demand nor the dynamics of bottlenecks \u2013 and, in the worst case, it eats into margins.<\/p>\n\n

This presents a clear challenge for executive boards and supply chain managers: They must integrate resilience, costs, regulatory requirements, and sustainability into a consistent management model \u2013 not at the Excel level, but at the digital core.<\/p>\n\n

Master Data Segmentation as an Operational Management Tool<\/h2>\n\n

This is where master data segmentation comes into play. Leading chemical companies use it to manage their supply chains not generically, but according to clear priorities and rules. In modern SAP planning environments, it forms the foundation for touchless planning \u2013 that is, planning processes in which routine decisions are made based on data and without manual intervention. The crucial step is to intelligently link commercial customer priorities with regulatory guidelines and compliance requirements. In practice, this means that A\/B\/C customer classifications, key contracts, and margin logic are stored in the master data in such a way that, in the event of a bottleneck, allocation decisions are not made spontaneously \u201con a gut feeling\u201d but consistently reflect the strategic direction. A-customers with high margins and long-term significance are given priority, while B and C segments are served according to their role.<\/p>\n\n

This commercial perspective must be integrated with a clear regulatory framework. New formulations are checked against prohibited substance lists as early as the development stage; raw materials are validated upon receipt; and export restrictions \u2013 such as REACH in Europe or TSCA in the U.S. \u2013 are automatically reconciled upon shipment. The result: The ERP system ensures that allocations during bottleneck situations are both commercially optimal and 100% compliant with chemical and environmental laws.<\/p>\n\n

For C-level decision-makers, this shifts the perspective on master data. It is no longer merely \u201coperational window dressing,\u201d but rather the operational reflection of margin, customer, and compliance strategies. And it forms the foundation that enables supply chains to transition from \u201cjust-in-time\u201d to \u201cjust-in-case\u201d without descending into chaos or excess inventory.<\/p>\n\n

Dynamic Scenarios and Re-Routing with SAP IBP \u2013 The Digital Core Becomes the Control Center<\/h2>\n\n

However, master data segmentation alone is not enough. When key procurement routes fail or plants are temporarily shut down, active, data-driven control is required. This is where SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP) comes in.<\/p>\n\n

Based on this, it generates proposals for dynamic re-routing: alternative modes of transport, alternate warehouses, and adjusted production allocations.<\/p>\n\n

Through Synchronized Planning, these tactical decisions in SAP IBP are directly linked to operational detailed planning and material availability checks in SAP S\/4HANA. Planning thus becomes not an isolated reporting exercise, but an integrated control process: the digital core connects portfolio strategy, location decisions, and supply chain measures into a consistent picture.<\/p>\n\n

This is exactly why we focused so heavily on Clean Core and governance in the second article. In specialty chemicals and at the interface with the pharmaceutical industry, CSA\/CSV and GxP requirements apply. Any system modification can trigger a validation process. The Clean Core principle significantly reduces this effort because it controls changes, keeps them within the bounds of the standard, and thereby ensures that upgrades remain predictable. With the shift to dynamic supply chains, another factor is stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight: sustainability. In many chemical companies, approximately 75% of emissions come from Scope 3 categories, particularly logistics and transportation. In conjunction with S\/4 and IBP data, emissions can be calculated along specific routes and scenarios and linked to traditional parameters such as costs and delivery times.<\/p>\n\n

After all, sustainability doesn\u2019t stop at reporting \u2013 it flows directly into margin calculations. The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) becomes a pricing factor. When customers demand low-carbon chemicals, the contract \u2013 and the margin \u2013 goes to the supplier who can calculate the PCF with batch-level precision directly from the S\/4 core system, transparently document it, and integrate it into their pricing logic. SAP Sustainability Footprint Management provides the functional foundation for this by linking emissions data \u2013 both technically and functionally \u2013 with the master and transaction data in the ERP landscape.<\/p>\n\n

As a result, logistics transforms from a mere cost center into an active driver of corporate sustainability goals, and PCF transparency shifts from a mandatory ESG requirement to a matter of competitiveness.
